A deadly prosecutor

They call him the King of Death Row. Randal Korn has sent more men to their deaths than any district attorney in the history of the United States.

A twisted ritualistic killing

When a young woman, Skylar Edwards, is found murdered in Buckstown, Alabama, a corrupt sheriff arrests the last person to see her alive, Andy Dubois. It doesn't seem to matter to anyone that Andy is innocent.

A small town boiling with rage

Everyone in Buckstown believes Andy is guilty. He has no hope of a fair trial. And the local defense attorney assigned to represent him has disappeared.

A former con-artist

Hot shot New York lawyer Eddie Flynn travels south to fight fire with fire. He plans to destroy the prosecutors case, find the real killer and save Andy from the electric chair.

But the murders are just beginning.

Is Eddie Flynn next?

The Devil's Advocate - Eddie Flynn 6 by Steve Cavanagh

The Covid lockdown period was one of the worst periods in modern history especially for those of us who have been born post the world wars. Economic and life sanctions paralyzed the world.

An unfortunate and unintended but positive side effect was for bookworms like me, who was also a workaholic with suddenly an ample amount of time in my hands and nothing significant to do beyond the mandatory video conferences and discussions. Having created a significant corpus for my then organization, my team and I were blessed that remuneration or the lack thereof was not a challenge during the trying times unlike for millions of others.

I used the time responsibly exploring new authors, new verticals, graphic novels and many other kinds of books that I never read. This was also the time to make a sizable but ultimately an insignificant dent on my TBR and my collection.

Having ditched the hard copy to a large extent over the last decade or so, my collection has burgeoned much beyond anything that I had imagined when focusing on the hard copies. So these couple of years I was able to read books that I was interested but somehow forgot, books that turned out to be fantastic.

Steve was my Covid 19 discovery, not a great thing to say about the author who has fast-tracked into my favorite authors list. The timing of discovering his books was not great but have to thank "goodreads" because it was in their legal thriller list that I saw his book Thirteen and waded in. I have not looked back since.

Legal thrillers are my favorite genre even in movies where I love a good courtroom drama and have been an old fan of Grisham. Eddie Flynn is now a fav character as well.

This book is an adventure in itself. A sadistic DA who has efficiently and ruthlessly manipulated the legal system to become a murder of sorts, having created his personal feeder system to send people into death row. The paradox is that the position of a DA, which is political in nature revels on efficiency of punishment. A popular and successful DA will be one who has a higher conviction rate especially the infamous ones.

Steve has baited the system, leaned on its foundations and churned out a potboiler that makes the reader hate the characters as well as question whether the system is as kosher as it should be or as the founding fathers of the constitution meant it to be.

The story is fast paced as are all of the Eddie Flynn books and the style of pulling a rabbit out of the hat is also present. What entertains is that there are two branches in operation, the first is the legal one in the court and the other one outside where forces for and against the case clash with increased violence.
