"Steve refused to surrender. Even though he knew the creature was right behind him, he wouldn't quit. He would make it. Just as that beacon of hope began to shine down upon him, the bright sun overhead vanished from view. Confused, he gazed wide-eyed as the daylight grew dim. Then he realized the ultimate horror: the creature had overtaken him, its jaws opened wide."

"He was in its mouth."

A coastal community faces the wrath of a mysterious sea creature in Max Hawthorne's heart pounding new novel, "Kronos Rising."

Devastated by his wife's tragic drowning, Olympic hopeful Jake Braddock turns his back on fame and fortune and retreats to his childhood home of Paradise Cove, Florida. He accepts the job of town sheriff, hoping to find the solace he so desperately craves.

He finds anything but.

A series of horrifying deaths and disappearances send a flood of panic through the idyllic town. It is only after the ravaged carcass of a full-grown whale surfaces, however, that the real terror begins.

Soon Jake finds himself drawn into an ancient-a mystery that ends with him adrift at sea, battling for survival against the deadliest predator the world has ever seen. It is a creature whose ancestors ruled the prehistoric seas. Now freed after eons of imprisonment, it has risen to reclaim the oceans of the world as its own.

And it's hungry.

Kronos Rising 1 Review

When I first read this book in Nov 2020 having discovered the author Max on KU (Kindle Unlimited), I felt the book was too long and my first review that is still available on amazon with a rating of three stars and is also available here at the end of this review. I had mentioned there that this was my first book from the author and I reserved my comments till I finish a 2nd book and had started on the sequel.

An year later, I read the book for a second time and realized that my perception of the story had changed. It was a whole lot more enjoyable and this time around the story rocked. I had read the follow-up Plague by then and fallen in love with the characters and the prehistoric animal that was driving it. After the third time reading this week has reinforced my perception.

When it comes to terror in the oceans and stoking the fear of water, Peter Benchley drove the fear and terror into peoples minds through his books and then Spielberg took it up and raised it several notches with Jaws.

Peter Benchley with Jaws had redefined sharks and creature features. The bigger, the better, the more dangerous and the more unpredictable.

Here in this book we have the pliosaurs and not many animals from the early Cretaceous went as big as these sea reptiles who ruled the ancient oceans during the late Jurrassic and early Cretaceous period. Mosasaurs possibly went bigger but they came in the late Cretaceous period not related to the dinosaurs

The visuals presented by the fantastic text left no room for respite and Max's knowledge of the predators and his command over the subject made for great reading. The book starts to suck you in and moves fantastically from the Cretaceous to the current with objective justification for its re-entry into the current world.

As I write this review, I have completed the set till date and have found every one of them entertaining reading and also emotionally satisfying with every character getting their comeuppance in sync with their roles in the stories.

The book starts off

The sightings of the animal that people don't recognize provides everyone with their favorite culprit the shark but when things unveil everyone is in for a surprise.

Max also brings to the fore many killer truths that more often than not we tend to ignore when it comes to humans ravaging nature and we have the plucky heroine who tries to protect baby seals almost at the cost of her life and we learn plenty about greed in the form of mass murder of whales and sharks for particular body parts famous as delicacies and how this is unsettling and is putting the world at risk.

The starring protagonists of Jake Braddock and Amara are in their respective elements and rest of the cast are mostly chowder. The story leaves enough open for sequels of which we have plenty.

Recommended for readers looking for a horror/creature feature.

***BONUS REVIEW***

My First Review on Amazon with 3 star rating

The book is too long.

Peter Benchley was the man who drove this niche with his provocative Jaws nearly 46 years ago and many have tried to fill his boots including the man himself. There are myriads of writings in this genre and B & mainstream movies galore.

Two of my favorite things are horror and the sea and in Max' book I snagged both aplenty. Kronosaurus the apex predator is an excellent choice for the starring role and the weavings between the Cretaceous and the present push the story along with interest. The juxtaposition of Armageddon that culled the dinosaurs is backstopped into the story seamlessly with a neat end of the world story from the point of view of the leviathans.

The length edited would have made an even tauter storyline but all in all a good read and as a first time author for me, I reserve my comments till I finish a 2nd book. I am starting on the sequel............

So lets see

The book can be recommended as intriguing.
