Chapter 1:
Written by John Layman and illustrated by Miguel Montenegro, we begin with Ashley J. Williams transported to the world of Xena and Gabrielle! Throw in the Necronomicon and an evil, little Ash taking charge of a group of fairies (the winged kind) and you’ve got yourselves one rollicking adventure!
Chapter 2:
After the events of their last meet-up, Ash is back in “real” time and Xena and Gabby are back where they started, but they’re not going to stay there, not if the Necronomicon has anything to do with it!
Chapter 3:
Xena, Warrior Princess, has toppled nations through the force of her will. She’s captained the deadliest pirate crew ever to sail the seas. She even turned her back on her past, seeking redemption for her darker acts alongside her partner Gabrielle. And yet, despite her propensity for defeating all odds, her thousand- strong army has fallen to an implacable and ancient evil. Her only recourse? To use the dreaded Necronomicon to summon Ash Williams – the wise-ass, butt-kicking, smooth-talkin’ demon-killer from the future – for aid! But how can Xena save the world when that chainsaw-wielding knucklehead’s every temporal mishap threatens to unravel time itself?
The Army of Darkness comics are based on the film of the same name as a part of the Evil Dead series follow the adventures of Ash Williams (played by Bruce Campbell in the movie and most of the comics), and has included a number of crossovers with a wide variety of characters.
This particular story arc sees intersection of Ash' adventures which take him to Xena land. Once again the story has Ash battling the powers of the Necronomicon and time travels to the time of Xena and Gabrielle for a series of adventures with the deadites. With Ash' ego and quirks, the book is fun to see him crossing paths and swords with Xena.
This omnibus combines the three volumes of the series. The first volume has Ash dropping into Xena's territory while they, i.e. Xena, Gabrielle and Autolycus (a thief and Ash lookalike) are travelling and trying to stay in and out of trouble. The land is also visited by the evil Lilliputian Ash seen in the movies who uses the power to become the king of the winged faeries and wroughts his own brand of influence in the area. There are lots of adventures and misadventures with wisecracks aplenty with literally 3 Ash' (Ash, Autolycus and Evil Ash) moving around. The first volume has the influence of a micro Necronomicon. Ash trying to seduce Xena and Gabrielle with his male bravado is a stinker for some laughs.
The next volume is the weakest of the three but still an entertaining ride, with a time warp bringing the Xena and team to Ash' time and we have Autolycus as a S-mart franchise and at the centre of the cloud. The Deadites are back and have a surprise at their head or rather as their head.
The third volume has an immense lot of time travel and also has a Groundhog Day / Source Code like loop sequence where Xena invokes the help of Ash by tearing a page of the Necronomicon, with a deadite army on the point of killing her and Ash keeps reaching the wrong points of her life from childhood onwards.
This volume has some very good back and forth quips and tongue in cheek humor.
