Book Blurb

An innocent father serving life for the murder of his own son receives evidence that his child may still be alive, and must break out of prison to find out the truth in #1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben’s latest breathtaking thriller.

David and Cheryl Burroughs were living the dream life when tragedy struck. Now, five years after that terrible night, Cheryl is remarried. And David is serving a life sentence in a maximum-security prison for the brutal murder of their son.

Then Cheryl’s sister, Rachel, arrives unexpectedly during visiting hours and drops a bombshell. She’s come with a photograph that a friend took on vacation at a theme park with a boy in the background who has a familiar, distinctive birthmark … and even though David and Rachel realize it can’t be, they both just know. It's David’s son, Matthew, and he's still alive.

David plans a harrowing escape from prison, determined to do what seems impossible–save his son, clear his own name, and discover the real story of what happened that devastating night.

I Will Find You

The story blurb is compelling and reading a book of a master like Coben more so.

The story reminds one of many other stories of wrong convictions, fugitives on the run, fugitive trying to prove her/his innocence and justice being done.

This story follows a lot of those patterns but with processes that make it seem a little bit less escapist and veering towards proper police procedurals.

The story starts off with our protagonist David in prison/penitentiary for a heinous crime, killing his 3 year old son. With a hazy memory of the day and occasional bouts of delusion and anger, he has convinced himself of the crime that he does not remember committing and has let himself go. As the son of a former policeman he has been mostly left alone during incarceration.

He has refused visitation rights and suddenly gets a visitor after 5 years, forcing him to meet the  and this encounter coupled with an attempt on his life by a prison guard gets him convinced something is amiss in his case. With this renewed purpose, he breaks out and goes on a mission to solve the conundrum.

His purpose and process that he follows forms the crux of the rest of the story.

What I loved about the story was the crime at the center, heinous enough for the squeamish. The precept of a father killing his child, a toddler is a shocker. The other thing was the pace of the story which was really good and helps complete the story at a good pace.

What did not work for me was that the story becomes run of the mill with set pieces that seem tailor made, like the help provided by the warden a seasoned man due to emotion but this could be explained as a weak moment for his godson.

The attempt to murder using a guard instead of using convicts from the penitentiary, which seemed logical and much easier for plausible deniability and people with long terms would be lining up for a better deal. The use of a guard for the attempt and that too with money paid direct into the account was a trail available for anyone who wants to check, made the story simpler.

The convenient friend who is a part of an empire closed the circle and made predicting the end easier.

The writing like most of Coben's stories is fabulous and setting this book aside is difficult.

Overall this is a good reading.
