Leaving his unsympathetic aunt and uncle for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry stumbles upon a sinister mystery when he finds a three-headed dog guarding a room on the third floor. Then he hears of a missing stone with astonishing powers, which could be valuable, dangerous - or both. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

This is the first book of the series.

One of my favorite fantasy books this is a perennial favorite. This is the story that started it all the series, fame, the blockbuster movies, the spinoffs, etc. A story about a boy named Harry Potter, an orphan whose parents were killed when he was a baby and is now being brought up by his aunt and uncle. He lives a thankless life devoid of love from his aunts family, derided by his uncle and bullied by his cousin.

A chance letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry followed by a deluge of letters from parliaments of owls gathering in the decidedly human (muggle) community which ends up being a riveting comedy with Harry's uncle deciding to have nothing to do with his magic and any connections to magic. Finally to drive home the point, a massive giant visits Harry's uncle's place to inform him and his uncle's family that he has been invited to join Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and he finally finds out he's a wizard.

This can also be seen as an allegory of sorts as a story of a kid who never fit in with his relatives and whose history was suppressed in a bid to keep him away from any special powers, with no friends and forever bullied into submission and how he arrives at a new world which knows more about him then he ever knew himself.

This is a story of discovery and adventure and in many ways typifies the lives of countless immigrants who lived in oppressions in their own countries and have made their lives in freer markets in democracies like America, England and India.

Once at Hogwarts, Harry realizes his fame and understands that he is special and he makes new friends Ron and Hermione and they have a great adventure more magical than the ones spun by the unparalleled Enid Blyton. This in short is the story of the mystery of the Philosopher's Stone.

This is my third reading of this book having read it first in 1997, some 26 years back and it has stood the test of time despite so much bombardment of fantasy tales today.

This version with the illustrated Kindle in Motion gives a fresh depth to the stories and fires the imagination with illustrations that seemingly interact.

The story despite repeated readings, discussions, watching as a motion picture is gripping and of interest as one relives the episodes. The book is one smooth flow with no bottlenecks and has all the ingredients for a fabulous repast with fights involving trolls, a Cerberus lookalike three headed dog, classes filled with excitement, chess with motorable chessmen, flights on brooms, a game played while flying and the threat of a super villain who has defied certain death, all this and much more.

If you have not dipped yourself in this magical world then you should do so without further ado. The characters will engage you with their lives and you will celebrate and cry with them. If you are a repeat offender like me (i.e. reading multiple times) then you have already fallen into the trap. You can only wade into the next one. :)

This is a difficult to put down book and highly recommended.
