Vacation Reading

The books entertain at a very basic level and it helps that sometimes one doesn't have to overthink and analyze. Just sit back and relax.

Have stated earlier in other reviews, the Archie's are like old wine and like wine seem to grow on you. The older it gets the more you enjoy.

I first discovered about the Archie's in the weekly magazine that came bundled with the Sunday edition of our newspaper. I also discovered other gems like Beetle Bailey, Blondie, Popeye, Peanuts and Dennis the Menace over the years in those papers.

I found out that the Archie's Digest and the Double digest was available at our local news stand. Being from a conservative small town, it took me 2 more years, 1990 to be precise to convince the uncle who runs the stand even today (and who knew my family) that I was of age to read the contents in the comic. Three Decades later years later the remembrance draws mirth and laughter when I share with my family and friends. Those were different times with practically the entire town being your extended family and you do some wrong and the news reached home before you do.

After convincing that I could take home the beauties, I found the cost exorbitant for a school student but still scrounged my pocket money to purchase them.

The books gave me great pleasure because I was able to share them with all my friends who enjoyed them more than me.

Here in this book we get to read some lovely new stories and some with great end lines.

We have the eternal competitors Betty and Veronica fighting over not fighting over Archie. Bit of a tongue twister of sorts but an enjoyable one.

The duo competing with Veronica hoping to beat Betty in cheerleading as a national network is recording and then in the end we have a twisted winner.

Veronica playing sneaky to get Archie out of town as she sets her eye on the hunk of the year and we have an even better twist. The quality of the art is quite good.

Comics and graphic novels and their concepts have changed a great deal in the last couple of decades with the art work and chiefly the storylines driven by ambitious writers who are not afraid to push the envelope when it came to classic stories and then immediately turning them on their heads and taking the books into uncharted new areas, literally going boldly where none of the previous generations had gone before (more Trekkie lines).

Beloved characters across the comic spectrum from the DC, Marvel universe have seen dark changes, remakes, remodeled, finished, doomed, destroyed, resurrected and even retimed to fit into generous timelines, storylines, origins and many more.

As a discerning reader I am sure like me a lot of other comic lovers ala the guys of The Big Bang Theory (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0898266/) the popular TV series would agree that there have been more hits than misses.

But more significantly we have been spoilt for choices.

Even with this much loved Archie's series the parallel storylines have some fabulous changes in the characters, like the Afterlife series which I would be reviewing at some other date.

This volume is more enjoyable being the traditional conservative Archie's storyline, all Archie's no frills.

Enjoyed the volume a lot and recommend it for the Archie fans.

Please do not forget to post your comments. I am an equal opportunity person so would love to hear your love or your hate for the review or book in any order. Please write what you did not like or whether the book was an absolute disaster for you and why.
